Can Tho, an attractive destination in Mekong Delta region
Travelling along the canals in Can Tho tourists will see many river markets. Dozens of boats of all sizes loaded to the brim with exotic fruits that would make your mouth water are bargained and haggled over! The tropical goods that hang on the decks reveal to tourists the products that the boat owner offers. At a call, boats will approach you and the choices on offer will not disappoint. This way of trading is unique to rivers-locked (delta) areas.

Can Tho is situated about 179 kilometres from Ho Chi Minh City where the river Tien, the river Hau along with three minor tributaries converge. It has been the capital of the six provinces in the southwest of Vietnam for centuries.

The city boasts a dense canal network. It will take you about 60 minutes by motorboat to get to the green belt surrounding the city which is known as “the kingdom of succulent fruits and flowers." There are unending beautiful gardens in My Khanh, Giai Xuan, Hiking Phu, and Tan Phu. The local people earn their livelihood by growing popular exotic fruits such as mango, sanh orange, and tamarind. The sunlight in Can Tho is special. It is almost like honey but not dazzlingly so.

Can Tho also offers other delicacies typical of the lush south: grilled mullet, simmered catfish, anabas, crab roasted with salt, broiled shrimp, eels or turtle. It is also famous for its "signature" duong nuong This is Can Tho cuisine at its finest. The duong is as big as a thumb, white in color , looks like a bee worm and nests on a branch of the date palm tree. People have to cut down the treetop and strip it to get the worm out. To eat the worms, first marinate them in a tasty fish sauce and wait until the sauce penetrates into their body and makes them wriggle. Prepare the charcoals and pick up one after another duong and broil it over the fire until it turns golden. During tastes fatty but you will feel it warm and sweet in your mouth. For southerners duong is the" number one" treat.
